LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Jordann White went 5 for 6 with two doubles and an RBI in the two games combined, but the Sonoma State softball team fell on the losing end of a pair of one-run games, 3-2 and 2-1, to host and 23rd-ranked UC San Diego on Friday at the Triton Softball Field in La Jolla. The Seawolves dropped to 11-9 overall and 8-6 in the CCAA while the Tritons jumped to 17-7 and 11-5 in conference play.
In the opener, UCSD wasted no time getting on the board, plating two runs on a triple by Maddy Lewis in the bottom of the first inning off of
Amanda Llerena. Sonoma responded in the top of the third on back-to-back RBI singles by
Jena Kaser and White to knot the game at 2-2, but a run by the Tritons in the bottom of the third, an RBI double by Sam Glantz held up to be the eventual game-winner despite some late-game excitement by the visitors.
In the top of the seventh and down by a run, the Seawolves loaded the bases with one out, but two consecutive groundouts ended the threat and the ballgame in favor of the Tritons.
In the series finale,
Carlie Daniel lifted a sacrifice fly to center field scoring
Leanna Georges, but that would be all the offense Sonoma could muster the rest of the way. UCSD plated runs in the second and third to take a 2-1 lead and the eventual game and series win.
Sonoma State returns home to take on Cal State Monterey Bay in a doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 1:00 pm. The Seawolves will then host CCAA-newcomer Cal State San Marcos next Friday and Saturday.
