SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Point Loma is starting to become a nemesis for PacWest affiliate member Sonoma State. After defeating the Seawolves at last season's PacWest Championships as a lower seed, No. 31 PLNU upset No. 26 Sonoma State, 5-4, on Tuesday (Mar. 15).
 
This was just the second loss on the season for SSU (9-2). PLNU improved to 6-8 with the victory.
 
Point Loma did what you need to do when going for an upset; get the early lead. PLNU went up 2-1 after doubles with wins by the combos of Hillary Ramage/Nicole Camaratta (8-5) and Michelle Torres/Kirsty Mountain (8-6) at No. 2 and No. 3.  Sonoma's Jensyn Warren and Jordyn Kearney earned the win at No. 1 with an 8-4 victory over Nikki Newell and Regina von Koch.
 
In singles, PLNU earned straight set victories on court 1 by Nikki Newell (6-4, 7-6) and on court 6 by Michelle Torres, while SSU's Karlee Budge (6-2, 6-4) and Amanda Zuidema (6-2, 7-5) notched victories at No. 5 and No. 4, respectively.  Kaitlyn Haithcock also came away victorious at No. 3, outlasting Jen Weissmann in a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 win to tie the match at 4-4.  However, the Sea Lions' Regina von Koch captured the match-clinching point on court 2 with a three-set victory, 3-6, 6-1 and 6-3 over Kearney.
