2016 PacWest Women's Tennis Championship Central
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The Sonoma State women's tennis team picked up where they left off Wednesday despite an 11-day layoff between matches, cruising to a 5-0 win over Holy Names in the opening round of the 2016 PacWest Tennis Championships in Surprise, Ariz.
The Seawolves, ranked 24th in the nation and the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament this week, improved to 15-6 overall. The No. 11 seed Hawks fall to 9-13.
It got started in doubles action as Sonoma easily dispatched the Hawks in all three doubles matches to take an early 3-0 lead. In singles,
Jordyn Kearney shutout Stella Dominik in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) at No. 2 before
Jensyn Warren completed a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1 to clinch the match. Once a team has scored its fifth point, the rest of the singles matches come to an abrupt halt.
At the time the match ended, the other four Seawolves --
Kaitlyn Haithcock (6-1, 5-3),
Amanda Zuidema (6-1, 4-1),
Karlee Budge (4-4), and Katherine Line (6-1, 5-0) -- all led their opponents on their courts.
Sonoma State advances to the PacWest quarterfinals and will face 14th-ranked and No. 3 seed Azusa Pacific (14-6) on Thursday at 9:00 am. The Seawolves and Cougars faced each other once this season, and it was APU to take a 6-3 win in Azusa back on Mar. 14th.
