2016 PacWest Women's Tennis Championship Central
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The Sonoma State women's tennis team saw its bid for an appearance in the 2016 PacWest Championship match come to an end Friday with a 5-0 loss to ninth-ranked Hawaii Pacific at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Center in Surprise, Ariz. The 24th-ranked Seawolves (16-7) will now play for third place in the PacWest Tournament on Saturday at 9:00 am against No. 35 Cal State L.A. The Sharks (15-4) will take on top-ranked BYU-Hawaii in Saturday's PacWest title match, also at 9:00 am.
After being swept in doubles play, Sonoma State came out strong in singles, especially at No. 4 and No. 6 where
Amanda Zuidema won her first set and was leading the second set, and
Katherine Long also earned a first-set win, but
Kaitlyn Haithcock was forced to retire at No. 3 and
Karlee Budge lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5, which ended the match in favor of Hawaii Pacific.
Regardless of Saturday's outcome, Sonoma State will earn its best finish in the PacWest Championships since joining the conference as an affiliate member in women's tennis -- the Seawolves best finish came in 2014 when they finished fifth. Sonoma and Cal State L.A. have not faced each other this season, but the Seawolves lead the all-time series between the two programs, 17-12.
