#24 Seawolves Beat LA, 5-2; Take Third Place In PacWest

2016 PacWest Women's Tennis Championship Central

SURPRISE, Ariz. --
After taking a 2-1 lead in the match after doubles, the Sonoma State women's tennis team closed out the 2016 PacWest Women's Tennis Championships with straight set wins by Jensyn Warren, Jordyn Kearney and Amanda Zuidema in singles on Saturday morning to defeat Cal State L.A., 5-2, and capture third place in the conference; it is Sonoma's highest finish in the tournament since joining the PacWest as an affiliate member in the sport of women's tennis three years ago.

The Seawolves, who entered the week as the No. 6 seed and ranked 24th in the nation, completed the 2016 season with a 17-7 record.  The Golden Eagles, the No. 4 seed and ranked 35th in the country, saw their season come to an end at 12-10.

The two teams split the first two doubles contests with Cal State LA's Isabella Lopez and Iris Raileanu defeating Amanda Zuidema and Hillary Fazekas, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles, and Kaitlyn Haithcock and Katherine Long beating Pyper Brown and Elizaveta Sokolova at No. 3 doubles, 8-4. The No. 1 doubles match was a huge battle as Jensyn Warren and Jordyn Kearney edged Nozomi Matsuoka and Kayleigh Hall, 9-8 (7-3 in the tiebreaker).

Up 2-1, Zuidema made it 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4, Kearney upped it to 4-1 in favor of SSU with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2, but CSULA's Hall defeated Haithcock at No. 3 to make it 4-2.  However, Warren finished strong, defeating the 37th-ranked player in the nation, Matsuoka, 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the match and third place for the Seawolves.  It was Warren's third win over a ranked opponent this season, and the second in as many days, wrapping up an outstanding freshman campaign with a 24-5 record, including 15-4 in dual matches this spring.

With 17 wins this season, it is the third most in the history of the program.

In the PacWest Championship match, top-ranked BYU-Hawaii knocked off No. 9 Hawaii Pacific, 5-1, for its 10th consecutive PacWest title.
