Seawolves Swept In San Marcos After 5-1 Loss Sunday

San Marcos, Calif. - Tied 1-1 early in the game, the CSU San Marcos Cougars scored four times in the third inning against Matt Hammonds and got a great pitching performance from Manny Barragan to finish off a sweep, taking down the Sonoma State Seawolves, 5-1.

Sonoma State began the scoring in the second, as Matthew Richards led off the inning with a walk. After advancing to second on a ground out and to third on a wild pitch, Richards was driven home by Spencer Neve to give the Seawolves a 1-0 lead.

The Cougars struck back fast with a run in the bottom half, as a walk and two singles led to a fielder's choice to bring home the tying run.

In the pivotal third inning, the Cougars sent all nine hitters to the plate, as a hit by pitch, a walk, and four singles helped the Cougars secure the lead for good.

Sonoma State only had four hits in the game, with Neve, Adam Manzer, Grant St. Martin and Daniel Caresio all hitting singles. The Seawolves were again patient at the plate, drawing 10 walks as a team on the day, but the team left 11 runners on base in the game. Caresio also added a stolen base.

Mitch Coombs pitched well in relief of Hammonds, throwing five shutout innings and allowing only three hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Hammonds allowed all five runs in only three innings on six hits and two walks.

Up Next: Sonoma State will return home on Monday morning for their second doubleheader of 2016 with CSU Monterey Bay, with the first pitch set for 11 a.m. in the opener. Game two will take place roughly 30 mintues at the conclusion of the first game.
