SEASIDE, Calif. -- Ugochi Anudokem scored 11 of her team-high 19 points in the fourth quarter to help cut an 18-point deficit with nine minutes remaining down to just two points with 30 seconds to go, but host Cal State Monterey Bay sealed the victory at the free throw line in the closing seconds as the Sonoma State women's basketball team suffered a 64-58 loss Saturday night in Seaside to open CCAA play.
The Seawolves are now 2-2 overall (0-1 in the CCAA). The Otters improved to 3-4 and 2-1 in early conference action.
A back and forth first quarter saw Sonoma with an early 16-14 lead after the initial 10 minutes of play, but CSUMB stormed out of the gates in the second quarter, going on an 18-5 run right before halftime, including 13 unanswered points over a three-minute span midway through the stanza to take a nine-point halftime advantage at 32-23. The Otter lead eventually stretched to as much as 18 points when Emily Hardin drained a three-pointer at the end of the third quarter
It was all Seawolves in the final period, however, as the visitors wouldn't go down without another fight. SSU forced eight turnovers and held the hosts to 3 of 10 shooting in the fourth quarter, but despite a 22-6 run to open the final 10 minutes of action for the Seawolves, the Otters would prevail after being forced to make their free throws in the waning moments.
Anudokem scored her 19 points off the bench, bringing down six rebounds in the process.
Madison Burroughs added 12 points, five rebounds and three steals, playing all but six minutes of the contest. Sonoma shot just 33.8 percent from the floor on 22 of 65 shots including 22.2 percent from long range (4 of 18). Meanwhile, the Otters were 37.3 percent from the floor (22 of 59) and 39.1 percent from beyond the arc (9 of 23). CSUMB's Aubri Smith nearly pulled off a triple-double, torching the nets for 29 points with nine assists, eight rebounds and four steals to boot.
Sonoma State will return home Friday (Dec. 1st) for a CCAA matchup against Cal State Dominguez Hills. Tipoff from The Wolves' Den is set for 5:30 pm.
