OAKLAND, Calif. – The Seawolves record improved to 2-0 as they defeated Academy of Art 5-2. The Urban Knights fall 2-6 on their season.
Sonoma State had 5 runs of seven hits and boasted no errors.
Aldo Severson tallied his first win (1-0) and
Jackson Berumen earned a save.
The first run of the game was in the fourth inning, and was for the Seawolves. Pitching struggles by the Urban Knights allowed Sonoma to load the bases without a hit.
Bryce Nagata lead off and was walked,
Grant St. Martin was hit by a pitch, then
Matthew Richards was walked. So, when
Joshua Montelongo grounded into a double play, Nagata was ready and able to score.
Top of the fifth and the score was tied 1-1, but Academy of Art still struggled on the mound. The lineup had two walks, then an Urban Knight pitching change, then another walk. Nagata sacrifice flied to center field for
Rayson Romero to score.
Sixth inning and the score was again tied. Montelongo singled to left center, at which point
Jake Sahagian came in as a pinch runner. Sahagian advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt, an error by Academy of Art.
Mitch West came in to pinch hit, and Sahagian scored off of his single to center field. The Seawolves were up 3-2.
In the 8th inning,
Jackson Leslie pinch ran for St. Martin, and scored, thanks to two advances off Urban Knight errors. And in the 9th inning West reached on an error, stole second, and advanced to third off a left side single by
Daniel Caresio. When
Kory Brown grounded out to first, West scored and the Seawolves exited the final inning ahead 5-2.
The Seawolves are scheduled to take on Fresno Pacific University in Rohnert Park Friday, February 17 at 11:00am weather permitting.
