Seawolves End Regular Season With Loss to Broncos 49-45

POMONA, Calif. – The Seawolves lost their last regular season conference game to Cal Poly Pomona 49-45. Sonoma State falls 9-11 in the CCAA and an even 13-13 on the entire season. The Broncos rise to 14-6 in the CCAA and 15-10 overall.

Madison Burroughs (13), McKaiela Tyler (11) and Carly Gill (9) were the leading scorers for Sonoma. Tyler shot 3 for 6 behind the arch. Jessica Mitz lead rebounding with six and steals with five. Right behind Mitz was Gill with five rebounds.

The Seawolves had the lead for most of the game and outscored the Broncos in the first three quarters. In the first half, Tyler lead in scoring and made two treys on four attempts.

To open the game, Mitz stole the ball and Carly Gill used it to score a three-pointer. Sonoma and Pomona traded the lead twice in the first quarter, the Broncos made a layup for a one point lead, but Tyler scored a three-pointer to gain the two-point lead. Another layup tied the game with a little over three minutes left, but Sonoma finished the quarter ahead by three.

Quarter two was extremely low scoring for both teams, Sonoma made seven points while Pomona only made five.

With two minutes and thirty seconds left in the third quarter, the Seawolves racked up their largest lead of eight. Gill scored a trey and two free-throws to get ahead by seven, the Broncos made a bucket for themselves, but Burroughs sunk both her free throws. Sonoma lost and regained their eight point lead twice in the quarter.

Fourth quarter CPP went on a nine-point run to take the lead from the Seawolves 34-33 with over seven minutes left. The teams traded the lead a few times, and Keich made a trey to get Sonoma within three with less than two minutes left. However, the Broncos were not to be overcome.

Sonoma State heads to UC San Diego to face the Tritons in round one of CCAA playoffs on Tuesday February 28 at 5:30pm.
