DENVER, Colo. -- The Sonoma State men's tennis team won their third match in five games Sunday morning, defeating Colorado Christian 9-0 before wrapping up its trip to Colorado with a 5-1 loss to No. 5 Metro State in Denver. The Seawolves move to 3-10 on the year.
In the first match of the day, the Seawolves swept right past Colorado Christian, 9-0, earning their first shutout since doing so against the same team three years ago back on Mar. 29, 2014. They got off on the right foot in doubles play as
Max Nudell/
Alec Wong won 6-4 and the pairings of
Kevin To/
Mitchel Heckmann and
Sullivan Roche/
Blaine Mengert recorded 6-3 wins.
In singles play, Sonoma snatched all six victories, capped off by Nudell's first singles win in a Sonoma State uniform, dispatching his opponent 6-3, 7-6 at the top of the lineup. Wong also notched his first singles win as a Seawolf, taking a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 2.
To wrap up the weekend trip to the Rockies, Sonoma State faced No. 50 Metro State, but with limited time before SSU needed to head for the airport to make its return flight to the Bay Area, the Seawolves lost 5-1, ending the match when the fifth point was clinched by the Roadrunners. The lone point was recorded by the doubles duo of To and Heckmann with an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles. It was their second win of the day.
Sonoma State will host No. 12 UC San Diego at the SSU Tennis Courts Saturday at 1:30 pm.
