Seawolves Win 12-5 Over Otters to Split Saturday DH

SEASIDE, Calif. - Day two's DH of the three day series finished with a Seawolf win over the Otters. Game one went to CSU Monterey Bay 3-2, and the second game to Sonoma State 12-5.

Cal State Monterey Bay's record now sits at 25-16 overall and 17-12 in conference, Sonoma is now 20-17 overall and 16-15 in CCAA play.

Game 1:
The teams started the day with a close one. The Seawolves had 2 runs on 6 hits and one error, while the Otters had 3 runs on 7 hits and one error.

The first hit of the game was a homer by Grant St. Martin. In addition to scoring himself, he brought in Trevor Abrams who had gotten on base via a hit-by-pitch.

The Seawolves stayed ahead until the 5th inning when the Otters put up a 2 spot of their own, and they eventually edged out Sonoma in the bottom of the 8th.

Both Nicco Toni and Grant St. Martin were 2 for 3 at bat. Matt Hammonds started for Sonoma and pitched five innings allowing only 2 earned runs and striking out six on 24 at bats.

Game 2:
Small ball won game 2 for the Seawolves as they scored 2 runs in six of the seven innings. They had 14 hits and no errors. CSUMB had 5 runs on 10 hits and 2 errors.

Jackson Berumen was the winning pitcher of record and rises to 1-2, Cody Bennett earned his third save of the season.

Daniel Caresio was 3 for 4 with 3 runs, Trevor Abrams was 4 for 5 with 4 RBI's and one run, and two were doubles.  Nathan Mann was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI's and one run, and Bryce Nagata was 1 for 3 with 3 runs and one RBI.

The Seawolves were criminal on the bases; St. Martin, Abrams, Jake Sahagian, and Evan Seidell stole one base each.

Sonoma scored in the first inning on a fielders choice and a sacrifice fly by Sahagian. In the bottom of the first, Monterey Bay scored the majority of their points on two homers.

The second inning was silent from both teams, but in the top of the third things started to happen for Sonoma. Sahagian was walked with bases loaded and Caresio came home and the next play Nagata scored on a fielders choice. The next two runs for the Seawolves were also scored on a fielder's choice.

Sonoma was ahead 8-5 in the sixth inning. To lead off the inning, St. Martin was walked, he then stole second and was able to reach third on a throwing error by the Otters' catcher. Abrams was the second at bat in the inning, and when he singled to left field, St. Martin was able to score. In similar fashion, Abrams stole second and when Sahagian singled to first he advanced to third. After the Seawolves scored twice on three batters, CSUMB made a pitching change. In response, Nathan Mann singled to left and Abrams scored to open the game up 10-5 Seawolves.

For good measure, Sonoma scored twice more in the top of the 7th. Abrams doubled to right center and both Nagata and Caresio scored.

The series will conclude tomorrow April 23 at 11am at the Otter Sports Complex.
