Seawolves Gallop Past Broncos In Three To Open CCAA Play

ROHNERT PARK -- Caiti Wiesner went for her third consecutive double-double, smashing 13 kills and making 10 digs, lifting the Sonoma State volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-21, 25-8) of visiting Cal Poly Pomona to open CCAA play Friday night at The Wolves' Den.  The Seawolves improve to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in league play.  The Broncos fell to 4-5 (0-1 CCAA).

In set number one, Sonoma State went wire to wire in the scoring column behind the dominant hitting of Junior Middle Hitter Morgan Annala and Wiesner blasting five kills each. The team ended up hitting .317 with only four hitting errors on the set. Leading the offense was once again Senior Setter Courtney Seda who dished out 15 assists.

In set number two, blocking was the name of the game. Once again Annala led the charge with 2.5 blocks and more impressively a stuff block by Annala and freshman right side Amy Trephan ended the set off of the Broncos top hitter Junior Outside hitter Andrea Bosnic. Bosnic did end the match with 11 kills and was the only member of her team to reach over ten kills on the evening.

After a ten minute intermission one would think a letting off of the gas pedal was in order. For this night the Seawolves were having none of that. Another wire to wire win of 25-8 showed true focus for the Seawolves. The Seawolves hit for .421 while holding their opponent to a -.212 hitting percentage.

After the match Head Coach Bear Grassl commented, "I was really excited about how hard we played tonight. Our defensive effort was outstanding. Cal Poly Pomona is a very physical team and we did a great job of slowing them down. Offensively we played very clean and extremely fast tonight."

The Seawolves face a massive test Saturday night as they face perennial power Cal State San Bernardino, which is ranked at No. 16 in this week's AVCA Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll. Match time is set for 7:00 P.M.
