ARCATA, Calif. — Sonoma State University improved to 2-0-0 on the year as forwards Alexis Espitia and Sara Van Wagoner combined to down Colorado Mesa University by a final of 2-0.
The match remained scoreless through the first half before Van Wagoner broke through in the 56th minute. A cross from Espitia found its way into the box before Van Wagoner buried her second goal of the year to put the Seawolves up 1-0. Soon after, Espitia doubled up the Mavericks.
In the 68th minute, senior defender Cecilia Sifuentes laid off a ball to Espitia, who took it all the way into the box. Espitia beat Colorado Mesa's Emily Signorio with a nice finish, netting her first goal of the year.
The Seawolves played shutdown defense throughout the game, limiting the Mavericks to only four shots on goal. SSU's Kristen Spear, who only needed to make three saves in the match, earned her first clean sheet of the season in the shutout.
Sonoma State returns home September 7 to host Dixie State at Seawolf Soccer Field. First kick is slated for 5pm PT on Seawolf Sports Network.
