Seawolves Bite Sharks In Three-Set Sweep To Open Showcase

NAMPA, Idaho - The first match of the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase was all Seawolves (5-1) who defeated Hawaii Pacific University (2-3) by the scores of 25-20, 25-11, 25-21.

In game one, the Seawolves jumped out to a early 10-4 lead before Hawaii Pacific called a time out. Senior outside hitter Calan Seitz led the way in game one scoring in five of her nine attempts en route to an evening where she finished with 11 kills on 21 attempts with only two errors for the evening.  The Sharks got the score within three points late making the score 22-19 but that was as close as they got until junior outside Caiti Wiesner finished the set with a kill of her own.

Game two was all Seawolves. While HPU had a very early lead of 3-2 the Seawolves fully dominated the set 25-11. The Sharks finished the set hitting a meager. -.107 compared to a lights out .421 hitting percentage for Sonoma State.

In game three HPU had a much bigger lead as they ran the score to 10-5.   Tying the game at 13-13 and playing almost point for point Sonoma State finally had a four point lead at 21-17 and then closed it out 25-17.  Both teams put up good hitting numbers with SSU hitting .300 and HPU not far behind hitting .296.

Statistically Sonoma State out served, out hit, out dug, and out blocked the Sharks.  Serving was a key component in the win as the Seawolves amassed nine serve aces and also applied a lot of pressure from the service line in forcing HPU out of system for a majority of the night.

Head Coach Bear Grassl:  "It was a solid win against a good team. We have always had tough battles versus Hawaii Pacific over the last twelve years and have split the last four times we have played them. They got us good last time in their house back in 2015 and today it was just nice to return the favor."

Tomorrow Sonoma State plays one match versus GNAC opponent Simon Fraser University who lost a four set battle with Dominican in four sets. Game time is set for 10:00 AM.
