FRESNO, Calif. -- Despite a strong 14-2 win over their hosts Friday night, Sonoma State was unable to lock up wins in either of their Saturday contests versus Fresno Pacific, dropping game one by a final of 19-9 and the night cap by a score of 15-7.
After SSU scored in six separate innings the night prior, the Sunbirds turned the tables on the Seawolves, driving in 16 runs in the first six innings of game one before Sonoma State pushed across their first run in the seventh. Despite an 18-run deficit entering the top of the eighth, the visitors continued to push offensively, scoring eight runs in the final two innings of play.
Grant St. Martin,
Anthony Clyma and
Alex Emerick each crushed a round-tripper, the first of the year for each of the latter two.
In the rubber match, the Seawolves found themselves behind almost as soon as the game began. Fresno Pacific sent 14 batters to the plate during a 11-run first inning, pacing the Sunbirds' offensive outburst. The Seawolves fought back throughout the game, plating a pair in the second inning and one in the fourth, before scoring four in the final frame. Despite the Seawolves seven runs on 11 hits, they finished six runs shy of the Sunbirds' final tally, dropping just their second game of the year.
The Seawolves return to action next week as they open league play with a four-game set against Chico State in Rohnert Park. Game one is set for 2pm on Friday.
