ROHNERT PARK -- Gabby Dupree allowed three hits in five innings of work and
Brigid Ruiz gave up one hit in the two innings she saw, both combining on a shutout as the Sonoma State softball team edged Dominican, 2-0, in non-conference action Wednesday at the Seawolf Softball Field. The Seawolves will continue CCAA play Friday with a 6-4 overall record. The Penguins, meanwhile, fell to 2-8.
After a scoreless two innings of play on a cool, breezy day in Rohnert Park, the Seawolves finally broke through in the bottom of the third inning when
Cameron Kirtlan, who reached on an error to begin the frame, came around to score on a single up the middle by
Alee Balanon. The Seawolves tacked on another run in the fourth inning when
Lindsey Calcany Blair opened with a leadoff double before scoring on a groundout by
Sarah Langley.
That's all the offense Dupree (1-1) and Ruiz would need in the circle. Ruiz was credited with her first save of the season, and the second of her career at SSU.
Dominican starting pitcher Gaby Katafias (0-2) was tagged with the tough-luck loss despite giving up only two hits in her six innings in the circle.
Sonoma returns to the field Friday against Cal State Dominguez Hills. First pitch from the Seawolf Softball Field is scheduled for Noon.
