Seawolves Catch Fire In Second Half To Blow Out Gators

SAN FRANCISCO -- Trailing by a point midway through the third quarter, the Sonoma State women's basketball team caught fire, splashing 15 of 20 shot attempts amidst a 37-13 run over a 15 minute span to sprint past San Francisco State on Saturday night at The Swamp in San Francisco.  With the victory, the Seawolves (10-12, 7-11 CCAA) reach the 10-win plateau for the third straight season and for the fifth time in 10 years.  The Gators fell to 5-16 (3-15 CCAA).

With four games to go in the regular season, Sonoma sits in a three-way tie for ninth place in the conference standings with Cal State San Marcos and Stanislaus State.  The trio of teams trail eighth place Cal State San Bernardino by one-half game for the eighth and final spot in the upcoming CCAA Championship Tournament in three weeks.

On Saturday, it was the Gators to have the hot hand early, jumping out to a 16-8 lead after the first seven minutes of the ball game.  The Seawolves slowly chipped away and eventually took the lead, but there was never more than a five-point margin separating the two teams for the rest of the first half and spilling into the second half.  In fact, SF State regained the lead at the 6:33 mark of the third period, a 41-40 lead after a made jumper, but that's when the Seawolves began their onslaught of fury to cruise to the win.

Sonoma State enjoyed its best shooting night of the season, connecting on 53.3 percent from the floor (32 of 60), 66.7 percent from three-point range (8 of 12) and 83.3 percent from the free throw line (5 of 6).

Kim Savio recorded her second-straight double-double, tallying team-highs in points (13) and rebounds (11), along with five assists.  Serena Santos scored a career-high 12 points while Madison Burroughs and Ugochi Anudokem each chipped in with 10 points.  Burroughs and Jerrica Crosby both handed out five assists on the night as well.

The Seawolves will head south next weekend for their final two regular season road games of the 2017-18 season.  They will take on Cal Poly Pomona on Friday before battling Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday.  Both games are set to tipoff at 5:30 pm.
