SANTA ROSA, Calif. — Due to rainy conditions, #14 Sonoma State Softball's Wednesday games against Pace University were delayed and shifted to Santa Rosa Junior College, however the Seawolves embraced the elements, walking off 5-4 in Wednesday's opener before exploding for eight runs in the second game to sweep the Setters in the doubleheader. The Seawolves improve to 19-7 while the Setters fall to 1-5 on the year.
Game One
In game one, the Seawolves jumped off to a quick 1-0 lead after Sarah Langely hit into an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first. In the second inning the Seawolves added three more runs from
Cameron Kirtlan,
Julie Davis and
Alex Flores to take a 4-0 lead.
However, things took a turn in the fifth inning. In her attempt to catch a liner, third baseman
Ashley Long took the ball to her throwing hand and was forced to leave the game.
Jenn Amaral came into replace her, and after the substitution, the Setters started to respond to their deficit. A throwing error by Amaral, allowed the Setters their first run of the game, and after some wild pitches, the Setters found themselves down by only a single run. Pace's right fielder Jillian Gartner then tied up the game with an RBI single, scoring center fielder Larissa Labs.
With the score still tied at four, the Seawolves entered the bottom of the seventh looking to end the game. Amaral, who led off the inning, turned on an 0-1 pitch hitting the game-winning homerun over the left field fence, her first of the year.
Both starters went the distance in game one, pitching complete games.
Brielle Vidmar earned the win, improving to 9-2 on the season. The Seawolf starter gave up three hits, four runs (three earned), while striking out two during her 94-pitch performance. Garrick MacKenzie was hooked for the loss and falls to 1-2 on the season.
Game Two
In game two, the Seawolves jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a flurry of hits and a few wild pitches. The Seawolves collected their eighth run of the game on a double steal attempt from
Malory Masajlo and Karly Macadandang, which allowing Masajlo to reach second and Macadangdang to score.
Brigid Ruiz (7-2) got the start for the Seawolves in game two and went four innings during her outing. She gave up two hits, walked two batters and struck out one in her win.
Gabby Dupree game out of the bullpen in the fifth inning to finish the game, going one inning, giving up a walk and getting a strikeout. For the Setters, their starter Jaclyn Flores only lasted a third of an inning, giving up seven runs. Emma Bernet relieved her, going 3.2 innings, and gave up one run while striking out three.
Karly Macadangdang went 2 for 2 on the day with a stolen base.
The Seawolves are off this weekend before heading southeast to Turlock for a neutral-site game against Western Washington on March 22. The Seawolves will spend the following three days taking on six different opponents at the Tournament of Champions, hosted by Stanislaus State. The Seawolves kick off the Tournament of Champions March 23 with a 3:00 pm game against Academy of Art.
