CHICO, Calif. -- Saturday provided to be a tough day for the #18 Sonoma State Women's Softball team as they dropped both games to the #3 Chico State Women's Softball team, getting swept in their season series against the Wildcats. The Seawolves lost game one 6-2 and got shutout in the second game of the day 2-0.
Game 1
Chico State got off to a quick start for the Seawolves when Bailey Akins singled to center field scoring Kristin Worely. The Seawolves responded in the third on a double steal attempt when
Julie Davis stole second and
Jenn Amaral stole home tying the game at 1-1. The third inning was an issue for the Seawolves. Chico State managed to five runs in the inning that was capped off with a Karli Skowrup three run home run. Sonoma State attempted to answer, but only managed to get one more run in the game off a
Cameron Kirtlan double.
Teresa Danenberg got the start for the Seawolves today, she pitched a complete game and gave up six runs (three earned) on four hits and struck out two wildcats. She moves to 2-3 on the year with the loss. Haley Gilham got the win for the Wildcats improving to 19-2. She gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits.
Game 2
Brigid Ruiz got the start for the Seawolves in the second game. She pitched a complete game giving up two runs on five hits. She found herself in trouble in the fourth inning when Chico State would score the only runs of the game. The Wildcats managed to score twice in the inning giving them a 2-0 lead which they would maintain for the rest of the game.
Naomi Monahan received the start for the Wildcats in game two and pitched 5.2 innings of shutout ball for the home team. She gave up three hits and walked three Seawolves but didn't give up any runs. Haley Gilham would replace the starting pitcher for the four out save opportunity. Gilham would face only four Seawolves, striking out one.
The Seawolves fall to 25-18 on the season while Chico State improves 39-3. Sonoma State currently sits tied for third place in the CCAA standing with Stanislaus State. Sonoma State returns home next week to take on the Gators of San Francisco State University. First game will take place Friday at 1:00 PM.
