TURLOCK, Calif. – In a Sunday evening match up with Stanislaus State, #25 Sonoma State split the day, earning a 5-0 shutout win in game one, before falling 4-1 in the night cap of their doubleheader.
Game 1
Brigid Ruiz took the circle for the Seawolves in the first of the day's two games and pitched a gem in her performance. The Seawolf starter went seven shutout innings, allowing only two hits and a walk, while striking out two on the day.
Stanislaus starter, Kylie Ragsdale matched Ruiz through four scoreless innings, but Sonoma State eventually broke through in the fifth.
With one out in the fifth and runners at second and third,
Julie Davis came up to the plate looking to drive home the game's first run. The center fielder reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on the play, but unfortunately,
Lindsey Calcany Blair was gunned down at the plate trying to score. With two outs, and runners at second and third, the Seawolves tried it again. This time,
Karly Macadangdang singled up the middle driving home both runners and advancing to second on the throw home. With the score 2-0,
Sarah Langley drove in yet another run with a single to center on the first pitch she saw.
The Seawolves took a 3-0 lead to the sixth where they continued to add on. With two runners in scoring position, Calcany Blair took another shot at an RBI. The second baseman grounded a ball to the pitcher, who threw her out at first, but a run would come in to score on the play, pushing the Seawolves' lead to 4-0.
Alee Balanon then knocked an RBI single up the middle, scoring
Jenn Amaral.
Ruiz got the job done over the final two innings, retiring all six batters she faced in order.
Game 2
The Seawolves built off their game-one, late-inning scoring to start game two, however, Sonoma State would only muster a single first-inning run in the second game as they went on to lose 4-1 in extra innings.
Brielle Vidmar and the Warriors' Megan Stacy locked into a pitcher's duel throughout the game, forcing a 1-1 tie to be broken in nine innings. Stanislaus State earned the walk-off win in the ninth as Maya Yoshiura connected for a three-run home run but despite the homer, Vidmar pitched effectively throughout the game. The Seawolf starter worked out of multiple jams—including a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the eighth—while stranding six runners throughout the game.
The Seawolves lone run came off the bat of
Sarah Langley in the first. With Macadangdang standing at first, the Sonoma State catcher squared up a 1-2 pitch through the left side that allowed Macadangdang to come all the way around to score.
The Warriors' first run came in the sixth inning on an unfortunate throwing error by Langley. With a runner at second, Kaitlyn Doyle beat out a bunt single, sending Alexus Martinez to third. However, Langley's throw down to first missed the target and allowed the lead runner to come in to score.
The Seawolves return to action tomorrow as they finish up their four game series with Stanislaus State in Turlock. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
