Seaside, Calif. – Sonoma State is now 3-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (7-8 overall) after a hard-fought 3-2 (25-27, 19-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-10) loss to the Otters of Monterey Bay.
The evening began in favor of the Seawolves, as they claimed a 3-2 lead early on. In an even matchup, the Otters ran away with a 12-6 lead. Sonoma State fought off the hold the Otters held, trailing until they tied the set 22-22. After the Seawolves evened the score there was no stopping their momentum as they claimed the 10 of the 14 final points to win 27-25. Set one included seven kills by
Tate Battistini, three kills by
Emily Eaton, two kills by
Adriana Baysinger and one ace by
Jenna Miller.
Up 1-0 over the Otters, Battistini recorded Sonoma's first two points with a pair of kills, to help the Seawolves take an early 7-4 lead. The set stayed within a one-point difference until the Seawolves broke away to take a 17-14 lead (
Brianna Ranney claimed two kills, and Battistini had a single kill). From that point on the Seawolves recorded eight of the second matches final four points).
Two sets ahead, the Seawolves gained a 15-6 lead before the Otters strung five-points together to make it 15-11 the strung another five-points to close the gap 17-16. Monterey Bay then tied the score twice before winning 25-2.
With the score 2-1 entering the fourth set Sonoma State gained a quick 3-1 lead, then the score proceeded to bounce back and forth until the Seawolves tied the score 15-15, from that point on the Otters found themselves with a lead 21-17. Sonoma State came within two points of tieing the Otters but dropped set four 25-23.
The deciding set fell in the Otters favor, it started with a 5-1 lead over the Seawolves. In which Sonoma clawed their way to 8-5 but could not seal the deal, with a fifth set score of 15-10.
The Seawolves return home for the 7:00 p.m. match against Stanislaus State in the Wolves Den on the campus of Sonoma State.
