First Game of the Year, at the Hands of the Cougars

San Marcos, Calif. –Sonoma State fell to California State San Marcos by a final score of 72-54 Thursday night. The Seawolves are now 5-7 overall and 3-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association after dropping its first game of the new year.
 
Three back-to-back baskets by Kylie Kiech, Zane Sheckherd, and Sophie Northern in the opening minutes gave the Seawolves a 7-4 push over the Cougars. The early 7-4 advantage was the Seawolves' lone lead of the game. Cal State San Marcos responded in a hurry, scoring the next six baskets to make the score 16-7 with 1:46 left in the first quarter.
 
San Marcos forced the Seawolves into 18 turnovers, as the Cougars finished the game with 22 points off turnovers. San Marcos also posted a significant advantage in points in the paint (42-18). Cougars shot 51.8 percent from the field (29-for-56), including 40 percent (4-for-13) from beyond the arc and 90.9 percent from the line (10-for-11). Meanwhile, Sonoma State shot 44.2 percent from the floor, including 35.3 percent (6-for-17) from the three-point line, and 45.5 percent from the line.
 
Though the Cougars held the lead throughout the game, Sonoma State was able to outscore them in the final stretch 13-9.
 
The Seawolves had three players score in double figures, as Jessica Solis finished with a season-high 11 points, Kiech and Northern added 10 points each. Sheckherd and Serena Santos had a team-high two assists, and junior Ugochi Anudokem grabbed a game-high ten rebounds.
