Seawolves Win Series Opener

Monterey, Calif. – Sonoma State won its series opener 9-4 over Cal State Monterey Bay. Zach Guardino continues to lead the Seawolves in hits with 43 on the season, after going 3-for-6 at the plate today against the Otters.
 
Sonoma State is now 19-16 overall and 17-13 in the CCAA.
 
The Seawolves came back from a trailing the Otters in the first inning 2-0, cutting Cal State Monterey Bays lead in half in the second inning when Drew Downing reached first on a fielder's choice turned into pitching error to score Patrick Tolbert.
 
The Otters continued to add to the board with an RBI double in the second inning. 
 
Sonoma States offense broke through in the top of the third scoring four runs off five hits with two outs. Harwell took hold of the second pitch he faced in the inning knocking a single to center field, followed by a stolen base to place himself in scoring position. Guardino battled off six pitches before hitting an RBI single to the hot corner. Guardino crossed the plate off a fielding error by the shortstop to tie the game 3-3. The Seawolves snagged its inevitable lead when Kory Brown scored off a single to left center by Pridy. Downing second RBI of the game extended the Seawolves lead to 5-3.
 
Cal State Monterey Bay added another run in the bottom of the fifth, but never regained its lead again as the Seawolves continued to grow its lead. 
 
A first-pitch home run in the top of the seventh by Tolbert out the Seawolves up 6-4.
 
With two down Sonoma State collected three insurance runs in the top of the ninth with bases–loaded triple by Guardino to deep center field (9-4).
