WBB: Seawolves Hold Off Late Game Surge By The Warriors

Rohnert Park, CA - The Seawolves women's basketball team headed into Thursday nights competition fifth in the CCAA standings and are looking to solidify their playoff spot. Stanislaus State came in at 10-9 in conference play and still had a lot to play for. Despite 22 turnovers in the game, Sonoma would come out on top 66-64 holding off a late game surge by the Warriors. Sonoma improves to 11-7 in conference play and has moved up to 4th in the conference standings. 

The Seawolves came out hot early shooting 53.8% in the first quarter leading 18-15. However, they would end with 12 turnovers after the first half allowing Stanislaus to remain in the game. Kylie Kiech led her team at the half with 10 points and a +15 when she was on the floor. The Seawolves also drilled 9 of 12 free throws in the first half and got the Warriors into early foul trouble allowing for easy buckets.

The Seawolves reached their largest lead of the game in the third where they stretched the game to 16 and scored 19 in the quarter. The Warriors made a surge late into the fourth but another 9 free throws put the game out of reach. Rich Shayewitz and his group finished 18-30 from the line on the game. Sophie Northern was the games leading scorer with 19 on the game and 7-10 shooting from the field. Kylie Kiech followed with 16 points and was a perfect 3-3 from the 3-point range. Ugochi Anudokem also finished with a double double recording 10 points and 11 boards on the night.  

The Seawolves pick up a huge win at home against a fighting Stanislaus State team and are now tied for fourth in the CCAA standings as we approach the last two weeks of conference play. SSU has control of their own fait coming down the stretch and will look to get closer to securing a playoff spot as they take on the Lumberjacks of Humboldt State on Saturday night at 5:30 PM.
