Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Takes Down Tournament Host For first W

Las Vegas, NV - Softball opened their 2020 campaign with the annual Las Vegas Desert Stinger Tournament. The Seawolves competed in 5 games over a 3 day period. Sonoma had a tough time on the mound allowing three 10-run games on the weekend but finished out the tournament with a bang against the host team, Montana State Billings. After losing their first four, the Seawolves came out swinging and put away MSUB 9-2 to secure their first win of the season and leave Vegas on a high note as they head to San Diego to take on the CCAA favorite Tritons.

Despite leaving the tournament under .500 there were plenty of upside for the Seawolves as they scored 7 or more runs in each of their last three games. Sophomore catcher Jordyn Martinez and transfer Amber Orchard both had a pair of homeruns on the weekend including 10 RBI's between the two of them. Martinez also recorded 6 hits and finished the weekend hititng .545. Other new faces for the Seawolves included infielder Alyssa Caballero who lead the team with 7 hits in SSU's 5 games including 3 doubles and 4 runs scored.

After just scoring 3 total runs in the Seawolves first two games, they found their groove against Montana State Billings opening the game with a grand slam from Jordyn Martinez! The Seawolves would go on to bat around in the inning establishing control of the game early on. Sophomore pitcher Camille Rodriguez would continue the domination for the Seawolves striking out the side in the first and finishing with 5 in her outing. Rodriguez would go 4 strong before senior Teresa Danenberg took over and threw two scoreless innings with 3 strikeouts to end the game. Infielder Giana Hays went 2-3 in the game as well having a strong finish to the start of her freshman year.

The Seawolves showed a lot of bright spots finishing out the tournament and they will look to carry those improvements into the opening weekend of conference play. The Seawolves were picked to finish 4th in the CCAA and finished the season with an NCAA appearance and CCAA champs as they look to repeat in the 2020 season!
