La Jolla, CA - After dropping 4 of their first 5 games in the annual Las Vegas Desert Stinger, the Seawolves had to hit the road again to open conference play against CCAA favorites and #6 ranked Tritons of UC San Diego. Despite a less favorable start to the season with back to back travel weekends, the Seawolves managed two come from behind victories to split the 4-game set. The Seawolves had plenty of positives to take away including several solid pitching outings holding the Tritons to less than 4 runs in each game after struggling from the circle in Vegas.
Sonoma dropped a narrow game one 3-1 as they struggled to get the bats going but saw a great pitching performance from senior transfer
Nalani Scates throwing 4 strong innings and only giving up 2 runs on 3 hits. Game two saw some late game heroics from the Seawolves.
Jordyn Martinez smashed her third homer of the season in the fourth to put the Seawolves on the board and make it 3-1. As we headed into the 7th, Sonoma needed a rally to keep the game alive down 2 in their last at bats. Junior infielder
Megan Ambriz hit an RBI double to make it 3-2 and then freshman
Giana Hays stepped up to the plate and delivered a 2-run shot to give Sonoma the lead! To add to the freshman heroics, Nicole Sarra would throw her first career CG for the Seawolves giving up 5 hits and 4 earned sealing the game in the bottom half of the 7th.
With a huge comeback win, Sonoma had plenty of momentum heading into day 2 and a series win was well in their grasp. Coach
Jennifer Bridges and her group had a flare for the dramatic this past weekend as they once again secured a come from behind win to shock the Tritons in game 3. UCSD took a commanding 4-1 lead in after scoring 3 runs combined in the fourth and fifth inning. Once again, the Seawolves were down to their last at bats. Senior transfer
Amber Orchard in her first season with Sonoma State smashed a 2-run homer to bring them to within one, then first baseman
Nicole Renner followed up with a solo shot to tie the game at 4 a piece!
Julie Davis then hit an RBI single up the middle to score the Seawolves winning run and once again shock the Tritons!
The Seawolves would drop the series finale 3-0 against UCSD but would see another strong pitching performance from
Nalani Scates and Nicole Sarra as they would split the game 3 innings a piece only giving up 4 total hits. The Seawolves draw the series 2 games a piece and will finally return home against another tough CCAA opponent in SF State. They will make their home opener on Friday and Saturday at 12/2 PM in a 4 game series. The series box scores can be found below.
