SB: Winning Streak Extends to 8 for SSU in Non-Conference Sweep

Rohnert Park, CA - The Seawolves schedule poses another long 6-game set with a non-conference doubleheader in the middle of the week. This week, the Seawolves face off against Pac West opponent Dominican University. Going into the contest Sonoma were winner of 6 straight and were fresh off a 4-game sweep in Arcata where they totaled 49 runs on the weekend in an offensive explosion. SSU looked to keep the streak alive and the bats hot before a big weekend of CCAA action against rivals Cal State Monterey Bay.

Game 1 against the Penguins saw freshman right hander Nicole Sarra take the circle as she threw 4 strong innings giving up 6 hits and one earned. The Seawolves had plenty of scoring opportunities but the Penguins shut the door every chance they got. Sonoma would leave 9 runners on the bases in game 1 as they struggled to get around. After an early rally in the first, Sonoma would lead 1-0 through 4 until Dominican would strike back with an RBI single in the top half of the 5th on a crazy double play. Dominican had the bases packed and the batter would single to center where one run came to score but the runner on second would be gunned down by center fielder Julie Davis. The runner on first to begin the play would then try to advance two bases on the throw home and catcher Jordyn Martinez playing heads up softball, would make the tag at home and then throw the runner out at third for the double play! The situation went from bases loaded with no outs, to one run scored, 2 outs, and a runner on second. Freshman Raquel Chaidez would replace Sarra after that play looking to close the door and keep it a tie game. After a lead off walk and a wild pitch, Chaidez got the batter to fly out to center to end the threat.

After a lead off bunt single from Martinez, she would get around to third after another couple of Seawolf hits where Amber Orchard would secure the winning RBI with a sac fly to center field. Jordyn Martinez would finish the game with 3 hits and was involved with both SSU runs scored in the game recording an RBI and a run scored. Raquel Chaidez would put the Penguins down in order in the 6th and strike out the side in the 7th to shut the door and take game 1! Julie Davis and Alyssa Caballero would also finish with 2 hits in the contest.

Sophomore Camille Rodriguez would get the ball for game 2 as coach Jennifer Bridges went with some of her younger pitchers to get some experience and innings on their arms in yesterday's double header. Despite the youth, Rodriguez would throw a 5 inning complete game shutout for the Seawolves only giving up 2 hits in the game. She would move to 2-0 on the season with the win. The bats were shy in game 1 but exploded once again in game 2. After some early defensive mistakes from the Penguins giving up 3 in the first 2 innings, freshman Giana Hays continued her tear from the weekend and smashed a 3-run homer to left giving the Seawolves a 6-0 lead and good for her 4th on the year. RBI singles by Martinez and Nicole Renner in the 4th would extend the lead to 8-0 and end the game after 5 complete innings.

The Seawolves improve to 13-8 on the season. After losing 4 of 5 in the annual Desert Stinger tournament to open up the season, the Seawolves have most certainly turned it around taking 2 of 4 from UC San Diego and SF State and now winners of 8 straight. They are in good form heading into their 4-game set with the Otters this weekend and will look to send a message to the rest of the conference with a big weekend!
