ARCATA, CALIF. - On Friday October 22nd, the Sonoma State men's soccer team traveled up north to take on the Humboldt State Lumberjacks in a CCAA matchup. A wet and rainy weekend would setup for a classic showdown between northern California rivals. The Seawolves came into the contest looking for a spark after several 1-goal defeats and tough battles against top conference opponents Cal Poly Pomona, San Bernardino, LA, and Dominguez Hills in which three of those four games would involve overtime play.
With two dynamic offenses, both teams would tally 14 combined shots after the first 45-minutes. Humboldt State however would grab the early lead just ten minutes in off of a Seawolf turnover in their defensive third. Despite the early goal head coach
Marcus Ziemer and his group would be quite accustomed to playing from behind as they continue to apply pressure all the way to the end of the half that would eventually lead to an SSU goal. With just one minute left in the first half, a tough back pass forced by the pressing forwards of SSU would create a long first touch from the Jacks keeper. The long touch in his own box allowed a Seawolf midfielder to challenge the ball, leading to a shot on an open goal at the top of the box from SSU forward
Sebastian Bernal-Santos. The Jacks keeper would recover for an incredible diving save but SSU midfielder
Bryan Rosales would be there to recover the loose ball and take a touch pass Humboldt's keeper. Rosales would get clipped by the keeper in the box as he attempted to dive at the ball, allowing the referee to award a penalty kick for the Seawolves.
Freshman defender
Miles Hodgson would change up the order for SSU as he would step up to take the kick. The big stage didn't seem to frighten the young player at all as Hodgson calmly slotted the ball to the left corner above the diving Jacks keeper to tie the game at one. The Seawolves would have some new found energy and life as they headed into halftime tied after being down a goal the majority of the half.
The Seawolves out shot the Jacks 8-4 in the second half of play but were unable to find the back of the net leading to their fourth overtime game of the season. It wouldn't take long for Humboldt State to score as the Jacks drove down the field off of a turnover from the SSU midfield where they would convert on a two on one opportunity to end the game in walk off fashion. A devastating loss for the Seawolves brings their conference record to 1-5-1 which included three overtime losses.
Sean Rohane and
Luis Diaz-Mendoza would combine for 8 total shots in the contest. Five Seawolf players would play the entire 91 minutes including midfielder
Johnnie Dodge, defender
Lucas English, and goalkeeper
Reinier ter Riet.
Miles Hodgson and
Bryan Rosales would also provide quality minutes off the bench for the Seawolves.
