HAYWARD, Calif. – Senior
Emily Eaton racked up a career best 27 kills to lead the Sonoma State volleyball team to a 3-2 victory over Cal State East Bay. The Seawolves moved to 5-2 in CCAA play with the win while registering 62 team kills on the evening.
SSU started strong, using a team best 14 kills in the opening set to take down the Pioneers 25-20. The Seawolves broke the game open with an 8-1 run in the middle of the set to take a 17-12 advantage. From there, they would close out the set with a pair of kills by Eaton and points from
Kiana Richardson,
Amy Trephan and
Jessie Hobbs.
The Pioneers responded with a strong second set to even the match but the Seawolves regroup for the third. The first five Seawolves points came on attacking errors by Cal State East Bay before Eaton took over. She recorded four consecutive kills to put Somoma ahead 9-7. CSUEB eventually pulled in front at 21-16 but once again Eaton was there to turn the tide. The Seawolves ripped off a seven-point run from there with four kills from Eaton and a pair from Hobbs. After the Pioneers reached set points at 24-23, Eaton delivered a kill and an ace while Richardson followed with the game-ending kill to make it 2-1.
Cal State East Bay would take the fourth set, leading from start to finish and forcing a fifth and deciding set. After trailing 3-1 early, the Seawolves scored five of the next six points, four of which came on kills from Eaton to take a 6-4 lead and never looked back. Richardson added three more kills to make it 12-7 and the match ended on none other than one final kill from Eaton.
Eaton finished the match with 27 kills, eclipsing her previous career high of 19 while adding three aces and 13 digs. Her 27 kills were also the second highest total in the CCAA this season. Richardson tacked on 17 kills of her own with
Brynna Slayton also setting a career high with 53 assists.
The Seawolves hit the road for a match on Saturday against Cal State San Marcos in Southern California.
