WSOC: Seawolves Advance to CCAA Championship with 2-0 Win over Cal State LA

POMONA, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's soccer used two second half goals to pull off a 2-0 victory over Cal State LA in Friday night's CCAA semifinal match.  A pair of freshman came up huge for the Seawolves with Olivia Ashbrenner and Andrea Lozano both netting goals and advancing Sonoma State to the title game on Sunday.

The game started slow with both teams finding their footing in a first half that saw only one shot on goal.  The Seawolves recorded five shots in the half but none were on frame.  Ashbrenner delivered the best chance late in the half with a rocket from 25 yards out that went just over the bar.  Emily Masursky started the game in net and made a stop on the only shot on goal.

After a scoreless 45 minutes the game moved to the second half with Lexi Zandonella-Arasa giving the Seawolves their first chance.  Less than three minutes into the period she sent a shot from 30 yards out that was stopped on a diving save by Olivia Spanish.  Phoebe Barnes took over in net for Sonoma State and came up with a big stop in the 52nd minute to keep the score at 0-0.

The Seawolves would continue to put the pressure on offensively and broke thru in the 65th minute on a connection by a pair of freshman.  Andrea Lozano received the ball on the left sideline in the attacking third and played a pass to the Ashbrenner outside the box.  Ashbrenner knocked the ball down off her thigh and ran onto it inside the box.  She calmly slotted the right footed shot past the goalie and inside the far post for the go-ahead goal.

Lozano would be heard from again less than ten minutes later with a goal of her own.  Krissy Keller got the opportunity started with a long ball over the defense on the left side.  Alyssa Silva ran down the pass, beat a defender inside the box and laid a pass to Lozano 12 yards from the net.  Lozano then one-timed the ball inside the near post with a perfectly placed shot for a 2-0 lead.

The Sonoma State defense did the rest, limiting the Golden Eagles to just two shots for the remainder of the game.  Barnes would make three stops in the half to earn the combine shutout with Masursky.  The clean sheet was the Seawolves' 12th of the season.

The Seawolves will look to close out the title chase on Sunday when they take on Cal State East Bay at 1:00 pm.  The game will be streamed for free at www.ccaanetwork.com.
