WBB: Seawolves Fall in Final Minute to Stanislaus State

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball team nearly handed Stanislaus State their first CCAA loss of the season before ultimately falling 55-52.  The Seawolves led until the final minute of play when the Warriors used a clutch basketball to take the lead for good.

Sonoma State came out firing with Taylor Johnson knocking down to two 3-pointers and Cielo Gonzalez and Jayme Blackard adding baskets for an early 12-3 lead.  The Warriors scored the next five points before Shauna Jackson's layup in the final seconds ended the first with the Seawolves leading 14-8.

SSU extended their lead to as many as 10 twice in the second quarter, the first on a basket by Kianna Maldia and later on a layup by Gonzalez.  Stanislaus State worked their way back into the contest with a 10-2 run to pull back within two but Skylar Schouten and Zane Sheckherd made it a 30-25 game at the break with three free-throws.

The third quarter was tight throughout with the Seawolves holding the lead the entire period.  The Warriors chipped the margin down to one-possession several times but the Seawolves consistently answered back.  Stanislaus closed the quarter with a basket in the final second but Sonoma State still took a 40-39 lead into the fourth.

The fourth opened with a quick 3-pointer by the Warriors to give them their first lead of the game.  Gonzalez tied the game on the next possession and after trading baskets the Seawolves took a 49-45 advantage on a triple my Maldia near the 5-minute mark.  After Stanislaus evened the game at 49-49, Sheckherd scored a basket plus the free-throw to put Sonoma up by three with 2:15 remaining.  Stanislaus scored on their next trip and then took the lead at the one-minute mark with a jumper.

The Seawolves committed an offensive foul on the next trip and then got a defensive stop to get one more chance to retake the lead.  Blackard would then draw a foul with two seconds left to earn a trip to the line.  Both free-throws rimmed out and the Warriors grabbed the rebound to seal the game.

Sheckherd led the way for the Seawolves with 18 points while Johnson tacked on 11 points and eight rebounds. Blackard finished with a career high seven steals to bring her total to 18 in the last four games.

The Seawolves are back in action on Monday night when they host Humboldt State at 5:30 pm for another CCAA showdown.
