BELLINGHAM, WASH. - On Sunday September 12th, the 5th ranked Sonoma State Seawolves finished out there pacific northwest road trip with a morning showdown against the 18th ranked Western Washington Vikings. The Vikings made a trip to the Division II National Championship game during the 2019 fall season and both teams entered today's match undefeated with early success so far in the 2021 season.
Despite outshooting the Vikings 10-6, the Seawolves found themselves down early after conceding a goal in just the 6th minute. That would be the first goal allowed by the Seawolves in their first four games of the season. As the match continued and the shots tallied up for SSU, senior forward
Alexis Espitia would get the Seawolves on the board with a near post flick goal off of a corner kick taken by
Alyssa Silva. The goal would come just before the conclusion of the first half and would set up a thrilling finish between two nationally ranked teams.
Despite the late goal before the half, Western Washington would regain some control of the match for the majority of the second half. SSU's defense was holding strong as goalkeeper
Phoebe Barnes would record a career high 11 saves in the contest, helping keep the Seawolves in the match. Her double digit saves would not be enough however, as the Vikings scored a late goal in the 87th minute off of a cross and volley shot inside the 18-yard box. The goal would prove to be the game winner as the Seawolves fell 2-1.
A terrific matchup to close out the weekend lived up to the anticipation as there were 40 total shots recorded, 17 saves between the two keepers, and 18 fouls to make for a competitive match. Five different Sonoma State players would record 2 shots or more in the contest as well to contribute to their diverse offensive attack. These two teams could very likely meet again in the NCAA West Regional at the end of the 2021 fall season. The Seawolves will look to regroup and return home as their next competition is scheduled for September 22nd where they will travel south to take on Azusa Pacific.
