FRESNO, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's soccer team started their 2021 campaign on Thursday afternoon with a resounding 4-0 victory over Fresno Pacific. The Seawolves used a pair of goals in each half and a stifling defense to leave Fresno with their first win of the season.
Sonoma controlled the pace from the start holding a 6-0 shot advantage for the first 30 minutes before
Renee Ketner broke thru in the 33
rd minute of her collegiate debut. Ketner took a pass through the middle from
Molly Murphy, dribbled by the goalie and knocked it into the back of the net.
As the half wound down, the Seawolves had one more score in them before heading into halftime. With just 26 ticks left in the first,
Andrea Lozano, also making her collegiate debut finished off a great display of passing with a rocket into the upper right corner of the net.
Malia Falk picked up the assist with a perfect cross to the front of the goal that found Lozano's foot.
Sonoma State held an 11-1 shot advantage through the first 45 minutes with both goals coming from freshman. The second half saw a pair of upperclassmen find the back of the next. Krissy Keller got the scoring started in the 50
th minute with an absolute strike from just inside midfield that dipped just below the crossbar.
Five minutes later, Keller's right foot led to another goal when she sent a long ball over the back line off the defense. Murphy ran down the pass and beat the goalie on a breakaway to make it 4-0. The Seawolves defense and goalie
Phoebe Barnes did the rest, closing out the final 35 minutes to earn their first clean sheet of the season.
Sonoma State finished with a 23-4 shot advantage for the game, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. Barnes made three stops in her debut and picked up her first career shutout and win.
The Seawolves are back in action on Sunday afternoon when they take on Dominican at 1:00 pm in their home opener.
