WBB: Seawolves Defense Dominates in 58-42 Victory over Cal Poly Pomona

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball limited Cal Poly Pomona to just 25% shooting in a big conference victory on Thursday evening.  The Seawolves led for most of the contest while moving to 4-3 in CCAA play on the season.

CPP scored the first basket and led for a total of ten seconds in the entire game.  Jayme Blackard and Taylor Johnson answered the opening score with back-to-back 3-pointers to put Sonoma ahead 6-2.  After the Broncos evened the score at 8-8, Johnson knocked down another triple and Chasity Spady added a basket plus the foul to make it 14-8.

With the score 14-12 after the first quarter the Seawolves put some distance between them with a 12-2 run to open the second.  Zane Sheckherd led the charge with six points as the lead later stretched to as many as 14 points.  The Broncos ended the half with a run of their own to send the game to the break at 33-25.

The Seawolves defense took over in the second half, allowing just 17 points in the final twenty minutes of play.  CPP scored just two points in the first six minutes while Sonoma pushed the margin back to double figures.  Offensively Spady scored eight points in the quarter to make it 44-33 after three.

Cal Poly Pomona quickly cut the deficit to five points early in the fourth but that would be as close as they would get.  Aaryn Pickett and Sheckherd combined to score the next 11 points to push the lead back to 16 points.  Pickett made four straight freebies and followed a pair of baskets by Sheckherd with a 3-pointer to seal the game.

The Seawolves held the Broncos to just 17% shooting in the second half and 25% for the game.  Sonoma State meanwhile shot 40% from the field while four different players scored in double figures.  Pickett led the way with 13 points while Sheckherd and Spady added 12 apiece.  Johnson also reached double figures with 10 points, all in the first half while adding seven rebounds and three steals.  Sheckherd also grabbed a game high 13 rebounds.
