BOX SCORE POMONA, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's soccer team picked up a huge CCAA win on Sunday afternoon, defeating Cal Poly Pomona 2-1 on a goal by
Malia Falk in the 68
th minute. The victory put the Seawolves in sole possession of second place in the conference with a 5-2-1 record, just one point behind Cal State LA.
SSU got on the board early with a score in the 9
th minute after applying some high pressure on the Broncos backline.
Annette Sotelo notched her sixth goal of the season as she put her body in front of clear by the CPP goalie. The ball deflected off Sotelo and went right into the back of the net for the early 1-0 advantage.
Just over ten minutes later Cal Poly Pomona evened the score at 1-1 with a shot from just outside the box by Nicolle Villarreal. The score remained tied at 1-1 through halftime despite the Seawolves racking up shots.
For the game SSU totaled 20 shots, nine of which were on target. Eleven of those 20 shots came from
Lexi Zandonella-Arasa who constantly put pressure on the Broncos defense. In the 68
th minute Zandonella-Arasa took a corner and sent it to the top of the six-yard box. The ball touched a defender and landed at the feet of Falk. She calmly slotted the ball through a sea of bodies and into the back of the next for the lead.
The Sonoma State defense did the rest from there, limiting the Broncos to just three shots over the final 22 minutes.
Kennedy Williams made four saves in net for the Seawolves to earn the win between the pipes.
The Seawolves return home this week for another pair of CCAA matches, hosting Cal State San Bernardino on Friday and Cal State San Marcos on Sunday.
