ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Friday, November 18th, the Sonoma State men's basketball team made their home debut in the annual Ron Logsdon Basketball Challenge in front of a solid Seawolf crowd in the Wolves' Den. Despite the home crowd energy, the Seawolves would go on to lose by double digits, 63-88. Junior transfer
Dillon Iyawe was a pleasant bright spot for SSU early in the game as the 6-foot-9 center grabbed two early buckets inside to give the Seawolves a 4-0 lead before taking an errant arm to the head and having to leave the game. Sophomore sensation
Jaylen Wells led the way with 18 points on the night as he kicks off his 2022-23 campaign after earning all-conference honorable mention honors as a freshman last season. He would add a season high 11 rebounds to his stat line as well to record his second double-double of the year.
Minnesota State was hot from three from the beginning of the night, shooting over 40% in the first half. They would have four players finish in double figures on the night. Junior transfer from College of Marin
Julian Bryant, also had a nice impact on the game with 10 points, 4 boards, and 4 assists. The lengthy 6-foot-4 shooting guard also added a steal to his resume as he showed active hands and ball pressure all game long. The Seawolves struggled from three for the majority of the game, making just two on the night.
Freshman guard
Nick Medeiros made his Seawolf debut tonight as he tallied 18 minutes and contributed an effective 9 points to lead all bench scorers. Head coach
Rich Shayewitz and his group were able to make it a three point game just under the ten minute mark of the first half on back-to-back jumpers from first year player
Brandynn Manning and
Jaylen Wells, but a 28-6 run to close the half would give the Mavericks a substantial lead at the break. Minnesota State would tack on another 41 points in the second half to improve to 4-0 on their season. The Seawolves started to see some shots fall in the second half though as they nearly doubled their point total and matched the Mavericks with 41 of their own.
The Seawolves fall to 0-3 to begin their 2022-23 campaign but will be back in the Wolves' Den tomorrow evening to conclude the Ron Logsdon Basketball Challenge presented by Cambria Hotel Sonoma Wine Country. They will take on Western Oregon at 4:00 PM live stats, live stream, and ticket links all at sonomaseawolves.com on the men's basketball schedule page.
