BSB: SSU Ends Skid and Grabs 5-2 Win in Saturday Doubleheader

HAYWARD, CALIF. - On Saturday, March 12th, the Sonoma State baseball team would play in games two and three of their four game set with the Pioneers. Despite holding a 3-2 lead in the middle of the 4th inning in game one on Friday, East Bay would storm back with a run in the bottom half of the 4th and 5th to hang on for the 4-3 victory. The Seawolves would grab another early lead, a common trend in their last several games, but give up two 4-run innings to fall in another high scoring affair, 6-11. Game three would finally tell a different story as Sonoma State would grab 3 runs in the 2nd and tack on two more in the 3rd and 4th to hold on for a 5-2 win.

DH #1: SSU (6) vs. CSUEB (11):

1ST INNING:

Back-to-back doubles in the 1st inning would kickoff game one of today's doubleheader as Joshua Medina would double in Ezele Wicks after his 1-out double to give the Seawolves a 1-0 lead. Freshman right hander Tanner Ivey would make his 4th start of the season as he was seeking his first win as a Seawolf. Ivey would have a terrific start as he went 3 scoreless and gave up just 2 hits.

4TH INNING:

Ivey would hit a wall in the 4th though as he gave up a walk, single, and hit by pitch to load the bases with 1 out. After a successful 3 innings of work, head coach John Goelz would elect to go to the bullpen and limit the damage. In came Ross Goldschlag for the Seawolves, making his 4th appearance. Goldschlag would struggle to get out of the inning as he gave up a bases clearing triple and then an RBI single to give the Pioneers a four spot in the 4th inning. A huge inning ending double play would slow the momentum as Simmons and Medina turned the DP.

5TH INNING:

The Seawolves would respond in fitting fashion though in the top half of the 5th as a 2-run bomb from transfer Otis Statum would make it a 4-3 game. Catcher Cole Brodnansky would single to center to leadoff the inning and come home off the Statum homer. The bottom of the 5th would be another big inning for East Bay though as the Pioneers tacked on another 3 runs to add to their lead and regain control of the game.

Two walks and a stolen base would yet again load the bases, forcing Goldschlag out of the game. Hogan Weaver would enter for the Seawolves and give up two singles and a sac fly to allow 3 more runs. East Bay would maintain a 7-3 lead after 5 full innings.

6TH INNING:

Once again, Sonoma State would not back down and respond with a 3 run inning of their own! 6 hits would highlight the 6th inning with knocks from Braeden Holliday, Nick Simmons, Cole Brodnansky, Christopher Wright, and Otis Statum. Simmons, Wright, and Statum would keep the train moving as each picked up RBI singles. Outfielder Desmond Gates would single with two outs and runners on first and second. Playing from behind, SSU gambled and sent Wright from second where he would get thrown out at the plate to end the threat. Despite being thrown out at the plate, the Seawolves tacked on 3 runs of their own and made it a 1-run game once again.

7TH INNING:

Weaver would remain in the game for Sonoma State to start the 7th but give up a double and an RBI single before exiting the game. Veteran right hander Vito Rodin would come in to limit the damage but instead give up another 2 hits, both RBI singles, to extend East Bay's lead yet again. The 4-run 7th for the Pioneers would put the game away for good, ending the thrilling seesaw affair as the Seawolves would drop the first game in the day's doubleheader, 6-11.

Medina, Holliday, Simmons, and Statum would record two hits in the game and combine for 5 RBI's with Statum's 2-run shot. Brodnansky would have a productive day at the plate as he led the team with 3 hits and 2 runs scored.

DH #1: SSU (5) vs. CSUEB (2)

Freshman Jason Doktorczyk would build off of his dominant 6 inning start against Monterey Bay the previous weekend as he made his third start of the season in game two of the day's doubleheader. Doktorczyk was on from the start as he went 6.2 innings giving up just 2 runs on an efficient 95 pitches to get him his second win of the season!

2ND INNING:

Three straight hits for SSU would highlight the 2nd inning as the Seawolves put up another three-spot on the day to jump out to another early lead. After back-to-back hits from Josh Lopez and Braeden Holliday to leadoff the inning, Christopher Wright would come through in the clutch with a 2-RBI double to right field to score both Holliday and Simmons. An infield grounder from Logan Douglas would eventually plate Wright in a fielder's choice to give Goelz and his squad a 3-0 lead.

Doktorczyk would give up just 1 hit in his final two innings of work, retiring 6 of the 7 batters he faced. After starting the 7th, Doktorczyk would retire the first two batters, setting the stage for his first ever complete game. However, a hit batter and a walk would put two on with two outs and head coach John Goelz would elect to go to the pen. The "pen" would turn out to be second base as senior utility player Joshua Medina would come in from second looking for the save and the Seawolves second conference win.

A 6-pitch battle would eventually be won by Medina as he got the Pioneer batter to strikeout swinging as he earned his 1st save of the season in his 4th appearance on the mound for SSU. Medina holds a sub 2.00 ERA in his 4 appearances and proves to be a viable option late in games for the Seawolves. Multi-hit performances from Medina, Holliday, and Wright would be the difference maker as the three combined for 7 of the team's 9 hits. Wright's 2-RBI double in the 2nd and RBI single in the 5th would help seal the game for Sonoma State.

With the 5-2 win in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, SSU grabbed their second CCAA win and improved to 5-15 overall and 2-9 in CCAA play.
