BSB: Janowicz With Back-to-Back Solid Outings, Picks Up First Win in Series Finale

HAYWARD, CALIF. - On Sunday, March 13th, the Sonoma State baseball team got on their second win streak of the season as they defeated Cal State East Bay in the series finale 4-1 yesterday afternoon. Consistent scoring throughout the day and a stellar 5.2 innings pitched from freshman right hander Blake Janowicz highlighted the Seawolves win. After a solid 5 inning outing against Cal State Monterey last weekend where Janowicz only allowed 2 runs to the Otters, he would receive a no decision in that contest but pick up his first win as a Seawolf yesterday and strikeout a season high 5 batters.

A clean and swift four innings of baseball would set up SSU in the 5th where a leadoff triple from Sean Pauly, his first of the season, would set the table for the Seawolves. A sac fly from catcher Lucas Townsend in the very next at-bat would plate Pauly and break the scoreless affair with the Pioneers.

Power hitting outfielder Braeden Holliday would add on to the Seawolves lead as he led off the top of the 6th with a solo shot to deep left field, breaking the team tie held with teammate Joshua Medina as he now leads the team with 5 homers. The Pioneers would retire the next three batters and get a strikeout to end the inning as SSU slowly continued to add to their lead behind the solid pitching performance of Blake Janowicz

In the top of the 7th the Seawolves would add their 4th and final run of the game after another lead off single from Sean Pauly. After making his way to second on a sacrifice from Townsend, Christopher Wright would continue his hot streak and double in Pauly from second. Wright finished the series on a tear as he went 5-6 from the plate with 2 extra base hits and 5 RBI's.

After a 2-out double in the 6th, head coach John Goelz would end the day for Janowicz making the outing his second 5-inning plus start in back-to-back weeks. In for the Seawolves would come hard throwing right handed and Napa Valley transfer Tanner Fonoti. Despite a slow start to the season, Fonoti brings great tangibles to the mound and makes for a tough matchup for every batter. After a 6-pitch walk to put runners on first and second, Fonoti would battle back and strikeout the next batter on just four pitches to end the threat.

Fonoti would remain in the game the rest of the way and give up just one run in the 7th. In the 9th, Fonoti would retire the East Bay batters in order and strikeout the last batter of the game in a fitting full count situation. After a solid 3-inning start against Monterey last weekend, another 3-plus inning outing in relief would prove to be Fonoti's most effective performance of the season as he also picked up his first save as a Seawolf in the teams 4-1 victory. Fonoti and Janowicz would combine for 8 strikeouts in the contest as this was the first time this season that Sonoma State would finish a 9-inning game with just two pitchers.

Sean Pauly was incredibly effective for the Seawolves in his 6th start of the season as he went a perfect 4-4 from the dish for the first time this season and recorded a season high in hits and runs scored. Pauly came in to score 3 of the teams 4 runs in their 6th win of the season. Joshua Medina and Nick Simmons each had a pair of hits as well in the contest. Those three would combine for 8 of the teams 11 hits on the day.

Head coach John Goelz and his squad grab their second win in a row and salvage the series split with the Pioneers. SSU improves to 6-15 overall and 3-9 in CCAA play. The Seawolves will get a week break before returning to Seawolf Diamond where they will take on Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, March 25th.
