ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Sunday, March 6th, the Sonoma State baseball team concluded their four game set with Cal State Monterey Bay as they dropped the series finale, 8-1. A much more typical Sonoma County afternoon would make for a great day of Sunday baseball. Another freshman would take the hill for the Seawolves as
Blake Janowicz would get his third start of the season.
2ND INNING:
In back-to-back games once again head coach
John Goelz and his group would strike first and grab an early lead. A 1-out walk and back-to-back singles from catcher
Cole Brodnansky and outfielder
Otis Statum would lead to the games first run. Brodnansky would lace a ball back up the middle to put runners on first and second. Then Statum would muscle a ball into shallow left field where the diving Otters defender could not come up with the grab.
Josh Lopez, who walked earlier in the inning, would scamper home to give SSU a 1-0 lead.
3RD INNING:
Janowicz would run into some trouble in the top half of the third as he gave up two hits including an RBI double to tie up the game. After a 2-out walk to put runners on first and second, Goelz would pay Janowicz a visit and settle him down, helping him get the fly ball out to right field the very next at bat to end the threat abd limit the damage to just one. Janowicz would power through 5 innings in his outing, giving up just 4 hits and 1 run in an efficient 79 pitches. Janowicz pitched to contact and had a nice rhythm going, giving the Seawolves another solid starting pitching performance in back-to-back games. His 5 innings of work would tie his season high and easily be his most effective start of the season thus far.
6TH INNING:
The wheels would fall off the bus in the 6th inning as Monterey Bay would break the game open and put up another big number as they have done several times earlier in the series. Freshman
Jared Esparza would make his 4th appearance of the season but struggle as he failed to get out of the inning. A leadoff walk would prove costly as two batters later, an Otters hitter would squeeze a ground ball single just past
Nick Simmons at short to give Monterey a 2-1 lead. After hitting the very next batter, Goelz would go to the pen again and bring in another right handed freshman in
Ross Goldschlag. Goldschlag would make his 3rd appearance of the season but the struggles would only continue for the Seawolf pitchers. Goldschlag would give up three straight hits including an RBI single and then a towering shot to deep left field for a grand slam to shock the SSU crowd and give the Otters a commanding 7-1 lead. Goldschlag would get a fly out and then an inning ending strikeout to end the damage in the 6th.
FINAL SSU (1) vs. CSUMB (8):
The Otters would hit another no doubt solo shot to left field in the 9th to give a final score of 8-1. The bats remained quiet for the Seawolves as 2 of their 3 hits in the game came back in the 2nd inning. Lopez, Brodnansky, and Statum would record the teams 3 hits including Statum's RBI single to left field. Right handers Hogan Weave and
Niko Tejada helped finish off the game for SSU. Weaver pitched the 7th and 8th innings in what was his 6th appearance. Despite struggling to find the zone early and giving up 2 walks in his outing, Weaver gave up just 1 hit and gave up no runs in his 45 pitches. He holds an ERA just over 2, one of the teams best ERA's amongst reliving pitchers. Sophomore
Niko Tejada showcased his versatility as he has made appearances at second base, catcher, and pitcher. Tejada completed the 9th and made just one mistake in the solo shot to deep left field. He would record a strikeout in the inning in what was his second appearance as a pitcher this season.
