BSB: Medina Picks up 2nd SV on Weekend as Seawolves Split DH

ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Saturday, April 9th, the Sonoma State baseball team split the series doubleheader with Stanislaus State as they dropped the first game 3-1 and then took game two on the day 2-1 behind a dominant performance from freshman Jason Doktorczyk and a 10-pitch save from Joshua Medina in the 7th to close it out.

DH #1: SSU (1) vs. STAN (3)

In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, freshman right hander Blake Janowicz would get his team high 7th start of the season. Despite an ERA of over five, Janowicz has recorded three starts this season with 4 or more innings pitched proving his length and effectiveness. Janowicz would record a season high 6.1 innings pitched in today's game as he allowed just 2 runs on 6 hits.

1ST & 3RD INNING:

The Warriors would kick things off with a bang as leadoff hitter Grant Bunker would hit a deep fly to left, taking outfielderBrandon Herter all the way to the track. Herter would leap to make the grab but as he collided with the left field fence the ball would bounce nearly out of his glove and over for a leadoff home run. Despite allowing a single to center the very next at bat, Janowicz would bounce back to induce an infield pop up and then an unassisted double play from senior shortstop Nick Simmons to end the threat.

Janowicz would surrender two weak singles in the 2nd to put runners in scoring position but he would come up with a huge 2-out, 8-pitch strikeout to end the inning and give the Seawolf offense some life in the 3rd.

Fellow freshman Jared Esparza would single to lead things off in the 3rd inning but an attempted sacrifice bunt from Lucas Townsend would prove unsuccessful as the Warriors pitcher was able to hop off the mound and throw out Esparza at second. Left Brandon Herter would come up big though the very next at bat as he ripped a single the other way down the left field line. Townsend had no other thought than scoring from first and a close play at the plate would reward Townsend and the Seawolves as Herter's RBI double would tie the game up at one a piece.

Janowicz would settle in nicely after the game was tied up as he retired 9 of 10 batters faced between the 3rd and 5th inning. He would give up another couple of hits in the 6th but induce back-to-back fly outs to end the inning as the game moved into the 7th.

7TH & 8TH INNING:

A 1-out walk would force head coach John Goelz to the pen as he attempted to keep things in check with Janowicz's pitch count climbing. Janowicz would exit to a standing ovation from the Seawolves dugout as junior transfer Tanner Kane would make his second appearance of the season in relief. Kane would only last 6 pitches and two batters as he gave up an RBI double down the left field line that would give Stanislaus State the lead once again. Then a four pitch walk would call out Goelz once again to bring in Hogan Weaver from the bullpen.

Weaver would make his 9th appearance of the season for the Seawolves and despite hitting his first batter he faced, he would battle back in a 7-pitch at bat to get the Warriors hitter to strikeout looking to end the threat.

A leadoff double in the 8th would eventually come around to score after back-to-back bunts. The first bunt would go down as a sacrifice as Weaver was able to field it cleanly and get the batter out at first. However, a safety squeeze with a runner on third the very next at bat would prove trouble for the 6'2'' freshman out of Citrus Heights as they were unable to get the runner at the plate and an errant throw would put the batter on first safely.

Once again Weaver would pull himself together and hurl back-to-back strikeouts with just one ball thrown to get out of the inning. The Seawolves would go down in order in the 9th on three straight ground balls to end the game and give Stanislaus State the 3-1 victory.

Maxwell Pappas would throw a 121 pitch complete game for the Warriors as they stuck with him the whole time. He would limit the SSU offense to just 6 hits in the 9-inning affair. Janwoicz would end up on the wrong side of this one despite a 6-inning gem. His 1-out walk in the 7th would come around to score and represent his second run given up in the contest to hand him the loss. He finished with 6.1 innings pitched giving up 2 runs on 6 hits and recording 3 strikeouts. Jared Esparza and Brandon Herter recorded 4 of the teams 6 hits in the contest.

DH #2: SSU (2) vs. STAN (1)

Another low scoring affair would highlight game two of Saturday's doubleheader but freshman stud Jason Doktorczyk would pick up his 5th win of the season to lead all SSU pitchers as he threw a dominant 6 innings of work giving up just 1 run on 5 hits. The Seawolves offense would only record 6 hits and leave 7 runners on base, but the two runs they did score in the 3rd and 5th inning would prove enough to seal the victory.

3RD & 5TH INNING:

Four punch outs for Doktorczyk in his first three innings of work would get him going and spark the Seawolves offense in the bottom of the third. Head coach John Goelz would bring a fairly unique lineup to game two of Saturday's doubleheader as power hitter Otis Statum would move up into the leadoff spot in an effort to get him to see more pitches and get better looks at the plate. The move would seem profitable as Statum started the rally in the third with a leadoff infield single in the 5/6 hole.

Two more singles from Josh Lopez and Joshua Medina would load the bases with no outs as Cole Brodnansky would come to the plate. Brodnansky would battle in his at bat with 3 foul balls in a 1-2 count but eventually sky one in foul territory to the Warriors first baseman. With a tough play up the line, Statum would decide to test the arm and catch the first baseman off guard and tag up from third. A bang-bang play at the plate would go Statum's way as he came in with a terrific hook slide to get past the tag and put SSU on the board. Brodnansky would get credit with the sac fly RBI on the play as both Medina and Lopez moved up a base as well.

The Seawolves would run into some unfortunate luck though as outfielder Sean Pauly would rip an 0-2 pitch right at the second baseman of Stanislaus State, keeping the runners on second and third. A fly out from Simmons in the very next at bat would allow SSU to just put one run on the board in the crazy inning and take a 1-0 lead.

Doktorczyk would run into trouble in the 4th as the Warriors were able to put down another squeeze bunt with runners on first and third to get the tying run across the plate. Doktorczyk attempted to get the runner at home as he sprung off the mound but a close play would force a bobbled transfer as the runner slid across home. He would induce back-to-back ground outs to end the threat.

In the 5th, Lopez would record his second hit of the game on a 1-out single to up the middle. Medina would come up and put a charge into a ball deep over the left fielder's head. A 1-out RBI triple would score Lopez from first and ignite the Seawolves bench as they retook the lead. Doktorczyk would record his 6th strikeout of the game in the top of the 6th as he retired three of the four batters he faced to give SSU a chance to close things out in the 7th.

7TH INNING:

Head coach John Goelz would make some more managerial moves as he decided to bring in Joshua Medina in back-to-back days as he looked for his second save of the weekend. Niko Tejada would move out from behind home plate to third base while Brodnansky came in to catch Medina.

Just as he did yesterday, Medina pitched to contact and was able to retire the Warriors batters in order with two ground outs and a fly out to secure the win. Niko Tejada would smother a ground ball at third and make the throw across the diamond to end the game as SSU would hold on 2-1.

Lopez and Medina would combine for 4 of the team's 6 hits in the contest as Medina's RBI triple would prove to be the game's winning run in the 5th. Doktorczyk was dominant yet again in the 7-inning game of the doubleheader as he went 6 innings giving up just 1 run on 5 hits and striking out a game high 6 batters, good for his second highest total of the season. Doktorczyk improves to a team leading 5-1 on the season and posts a 3.55 ERA. Medina's 10-pitch save would go down as his 4th of the season. He holds an impressive 1.93 ERA in 7 appearances.

The Seawolves improve to 12-20 overall and 9-14 in CCAA play after splitting the series doubleheader with Stanislaus State.
