VB: Seawolves Fall in Five to Cal State San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Sonoma State volleyball team dropped a tough one on Friday evening, falling in five sets to Cal State San Marcos.  The Seawolves overcame an early deficit to take a 2-1 lead before the Cougars took the final two to seal the victory.

SSU found themselves in an early hole after 12 attacking errors in the first set led to a CSUSM 25-16 advantage.  The Seawolves held a 14-9 kill advantage but could not overcome the errors.  Sonoma State came out firing in the second, using a 7-2 run to lead 13-9 and never looked back.  They racked up 16 kills in the second set and hit .325 on their way to a 25-19 win to even the score at 1-1.  Jaden Krist led all players with five kills while Jackie Winfield and Kiana Richardson added three apiece.

The hot streak continued into the third as the Seawolves used a 12-1 run to turn a 10-8 deficit into a 20-11 lead.  Winfield put the set away recording two kills and two blocks in the final five points to put SSU ahead with a 25-16 win.  Winfield finished the third with four kills while Krist, Richardson and Leilani Hallman each tacked on three.

The Cougars fought back in the fourth despite the Seawolves taking an early 9-6 lead.  San Marcos regained the advantage with a five-point run and led the rest of the way to force a fifth-and-deciding set.  The fifth set was all Cougars as they jumped ahead 4-1 and later used a 5-0 run to race out in front.  They would take the final set 15-8 as the Seawolves dropped to 11-7 overall and 6-5 in CCAA play.

SSU held a 62-49 kill advantage for the match but committed 31 errors.  Krist led all players with 15 kills while Richardson was right behind with 14.  Winfield and Jen Trephan added nine apiece with Trephan also recording 28 assists and 16 digs.  Riley Beyma finished with 21 digs and Hallman tacked on 7 kills and 6 blocks.

The Seawolves are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they take on Cal Poly Pomona at 1:00 pm.  Live video is available on the CCAA Network with live stats at www.sonomaseawolves.com.
