SAN FRANCISCO – The Sonoma State women's soccer team used goals by
Malia Falk and
Renee Ketner to earn a 2-2 tie on the road against San Francisco State. The Seawolves overcame an early deficit to pick up their third draw of the season and first point in CCAA play.
SSU found themselves down early when the Gators earned a penalty kick in the 11
th minute. Alexa Avelar stepped up to the spot and score the PK. That lead would only last eight minutes before the Seawolves answered back with a goal of their own.
Grace Ingalls sent a cross into the box that found its way to Falk's feet. She calmly snuck the ball inside the left post for her first goal of the season.
Sonoma State was not done in the half, taking the lead in the 30
th minutes on a score by Ketner. This time Falk sent a ball into the box that the goalie could not handle. Ketner ran onto the ball and slid it past the keeper and a charging defender. The goal was Ketner's first of the year and put SSU ahead 2-1.
That margin would not last very long as the Gators responded a little over a minute later with the equalizer. The rest of the half passed without incident and the game moved to the second half knotted at 2-2.
The Seawolves came out of halftime strong, notching the first two shots of the period off the foot of
Julia Betti. The Gators attempted the next three but came up emptyhanded with
Lolo Retsky making a pair of stops. The final chance for SSU came in the final minutes but Falk's attempt was blocked close to the goal line and cleared to safety.
Retsky played all 90 minutes in net for SSU, making a season high six saves. Falk led all players with three points with one goal and one assist.
