SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. - On Friday, November 10th, the Sonoma State men's basketball team kicked off their 2023-24 season in the San Francisco State Tip Off Classic. They would take on PacWest member Academy of Art and after 23 lead changes in a tightly contested game, the Urban Knights would convert a layup in transition with seven seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.
The Seawolves would take a one point lead to start the overtime period but Academy of Art would come down and hit a huge three to take a two point lead. On the very next possession, senior transfer
Cameron Barry would take his man off the dribble and kick to an open
Nick Medeiros who cashed in a huge three ball to retake the lead, 58-57.
The Urban Knights would steal back the momentum once again with a three point play to take a two point lead under the three minute mark. SSU would remain calm and patient though and two possessions later, they would take advantage of a smaller ART U lineup and center
Dillon Iyawe would bully his way to a left handed layup to knot the game at 60.
Both teams would trade buckets under the minute mark but the Seawolves would convert the eventual game winning basket after an offensive rebound from Iyawe. Iyawe would kick it out and with the shot clock resetting, Barry would take his man off the dribble and hit a clutch floater in the lane with 16 seconds remaining.
Academy of Art would use their final timeout and get a pair of three balls off in the final seconds but SSU would stand strong as both attempts came off the rim giving the Seawolves the two point overtime victory. First year guard
Andrew Henderson had a huge night for SSU, leading the way with 16 points and 9 rebounds.
Dillon Iyawe followed with 12 points and 5 boards of his own.
Cameron Barry started slow but finished with 8 big points including the game winning floater in overtime.
James Nobles and
Nick Medeiros combined for 16 points off the bench and eight different players would get on the score sheet for the Seawolves.
