WBB: Seawolves Lead Wire-to-Wire in Victory over Saint Martin’s

LACEY, Wash. – Alli McDonald led four Seawolves in double figures as the Sonoma State women's basketball team picked up their second straight win.  The Seawolves toppled Saint Martin's on their own floor with McDonald just missing a double-double with 18 points and 9 rebounds.

SSU wasted little time building an advantage in this one, scoring on their second possession of the contest and leading 6-0 just over three minutes in.  Four different Seawolves scored, including four in a row by Jayme Blackard to extend the margin to 10-2 at the halfway point of the first.  Sonoma State continued their strong defense and took a 15-9 lead into the second.

McDonald gave SSU their first double digit lead in the second quarter with a 3-pointer to make it 21-10.  After the Saints pulled back within six, McDonald would later score five in a row, including another triple to push it back to 11.  Sheriene Arikat closed the half with five points of her own, hitting a pair of free-throws and a 3-pointer to put the Seawolves ahead 37-24 at the break.

The Seawolves would never relinquish their double-digit advantage in the second half, always keeping Saint Martin's trailing.  All five starters scored to open the third with Sienna Cherwinski and Madisyn Clark both connecting on threes to make it a 15-point game entering the final quarter.

Sonoma State pushed their lead to 20 in the fourth and they put the game away with several key baskets.  The Seawolves grabbed 17 offensive rebounds on their way to 15 second chance points for the game while also forcing the Saints into 15 turnovers.

McDonald led all players with 18 points and fell just one rebound shy of her third straigjt double-double.  Clark recorded 14 points while Cherwinski poured in a career high 12.  Blackard tacked on 10 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

The Seawolves are back in action tomorrow afternoon with a game against Western Oregon at 1:00 pm.  The game will be played at Saint Martin's and will be live streamed through the link at www.sonomaseawolves.com.
