ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Tuesday, March 7th, the Sonoma State baseball team pieced together a 9-3 victory over Menlo College in their final non-conference tune-up before taking on the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay to resume CCAA action later this week. Head coach
John Goelz got everybody a piece of the win Tuesday afternoon as SSU saw 29 players enter the boxscore in the team's 6-run victory.
8 different pitchers would allow just 3 runs on 7 hits as sophomore right hander
Ross Goldschlag would get credit for the win for his two innings of work, giving up just 1 run off 2 hits and picking up his 2nd win of the season. After a slow start offensively, the Seawolves would break things open with a 6-run 5th inning, taking a decisive 8-1 lead which included a 2-RBI single from first year shortstop
Daniel Monti.
5TH INNING:
After a 1-out walk, back-to-back singles from outfielder
Jared Esparza and catcher
Chris Ortiz would allow the Seawolves to go station-to-station and load the bases. Junior shortstop
Daniel Monti would end his early slump with a solid 2-RBI knock to give the Seawolves a 4-1 lead. The 6-foot infielder from Italy would battle to a full count before lacing a ball just over the second baseman to score
Brandon Herter and
Joey Loveless.
Some aggressive base running and a pair of Menlo errors would allow another two runs to come in as Sonoma State extended their lead to 6-1. With two outs in the inning, second year player
Christopher Wright would continue his hot start to the season with his second double of the year. Wright would drive a ball the opposite way and score two more SSU runs, ending the 5th inning with a commanding 8-1 lead.
The Seawolves would tack on one more run in the 8th inning with a sac fly from first baseman
Mark Hernandez who recorded his first RBI of the season. Senior right hander
Michael Benz would give up a pair of late runs in the 9th but close things out in what would be his third appearance of the season.
SSU PITCHING:
Sonoma County native
Nik Kamages got his first career start as a Seawolf and threw an impressive three innings of shutout baseball, not allowing a single hit and going down as his most impressive outing this season. He would also strikeout a season high 6 batters, tying the most in a game out of any SSU pitcher this season. He also leads the team with 10 K's in just 6 total innings this season.
Kamages would hand the ball over to fellow right hander
Ross Goldschlag who would throw two quality innings of his own, and leave the game in the 5th inning with a 2-1 SSU lead. First year pitchers
Scotty Kato and
Greyson Long would piece together a scoreless 6th inning with Long making his SSU debut in his first appearance.
In the 7th inning, head coach
John Goelz would turn to right hander
Marika Lyszczyk as she would make her second appearance this season. Lyszczyk would induce three straight fly ball outs on just 8 pitches for a scoreless 7th inning. The sophomore right hander out of British Columbia continues to make history as she became the first female baseball player in school and conference history to pitch in a game earlier this season. After her second appearance, she maintains an impressive 0.00 ERA allowing just one hit and one unearned run.
