BSB: Kamages Gives Seawolves 5th Straight Win with 7-Inning Performance

ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Thursday, May 4th, the Sonoma State baseball team kept their postseason hopes alive with a 7-1 victory over San Francisco State. They would extend their win streak to a season high five games as junior right hander Nik Kamages led the way with a 7-inning performance, getting credit for his first win of the season. A pair of three run innings in the 7th and 8th would secure a comfortable 6-run win as SSU out hit the Gators 11-5.

DOMINANT PITCHING:

First year pitcher Nik Kamages put together one of his best starts of the season, going seven scoreless innings allowing just two hits and striking out five. Kamages pitched to contact and worked quickly, throwing just 95 pitches in his seven innings of work. After a 7-pitch walk with two outs in the 7th, head coach John Goelz would meet with Kamages and allow him to face the next batter, giving him a chance to close out the inning. He would work another full count and get a high pop up to short to end the threat and complete the inning.

Sophomore right hander Chase Banks would come in to complete the final two innings of the game. He would give up a run in the 8th but then retire the SF State hitters in order in the 9th to secure the 7-1 victory.

7TH AND 8TH INNING:

After a pair of singles from Lucas Townsend and Shane Callison, they would eventually touch home off of a pair of wild pitches later in the inning to give SSU a 3-0 lead. Two batters later, Christopher Wright would bounce a ball to second but beat out the double play attempt, allowing Cooper Callison to score from third and complete the three run inning.

The Seawolves would continue their momentum in the 8th with another three run inning to distance themselves from the Gators. Runs scored on a fielder's choice and a bases loaded walk would make it 6-1. Once again, Wright would come to the plate and hit a hard ball on the ground up the first base line. The SF State first baseman would make a nice play to keep the ball in the infield but Wright would beat out the attempt at first for the infield hit and his second RBI of the game.

FINAL SSU 7-1 SF STATE:

Sonoma State out hit San Francisco 11-5 and would take advantage of the Gators three errors in the game to secure the 7-1 win. Mark Hernandez has proven to be one of the hottest hitters in the league, leading the way with three hits on the day and recording a team high 16 hits in his last nine games. Nine different SSU players would make up the team's 11 hits.

The Seawolves need to win out and get some additional help from other teams around the league to keep their postseason hopes alive. They did all they could today, winning their 5th straight game and taking the series opener over SF State.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Seawolves inch closer to .500 on the season as they improve to 20-21 overall and 14-19 in CCAA play with their 5th straight win. They will take on SF State in a doubleheader starting at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 5th.
