POMONA , CALIF. - On Thursday, January 11th, the Sonoma State men's basketball team fought back from a 19-point first half deficit and brought the game to single digits with under two minutes to play. It would prove too little too late though for the Seawolves as Cal Poly Pomona would knock down three of four from the free throw line to ice the game for the 10-point victory. The Broncos got off to a hot start with a 21-5 scoring run to open up the game and never looked back.
Despite a tough shooting stretch in the first half Shayewitz and his defense would buckle down and hold the Broncos to just 24% shooting in the second half. Sonoma State would put up 35 points in the final twenty minutes led by bench scorers
James Nobles and
Matt Williams III who combined for 18 points on the night.
Cal Poly Pomona would lead by as many as 21 in the game as SSU didn't hold a lead since converting the opening bucket to go up 3-0. A near 60% shooting performance in the first half for the Broncos would dig too deep of a whole for the Seawolves, ending their two game win streak dating back to last weekend against Monterey Bay and Stanislaus State.
Andrew Henderson and
Julian Bryant led the SSU starters in scoring combining for 19 points on 7-15 shooting. Williams III and Nobles were great sparks for the Seawolves in the second half, helping force a game high 15 turnovers. Both players attacked the rim at will to earn a combined 18 free throw attempts and Nobles had the play of the game for SSU with a two handed slam in transition to cut the lead to 15 late in the second half.
Sonoma State falls to 8-6 overall and 4-4 in conference play. The Seawolves will finish their road trip against the 22nd ranked Coyotes of San Bernardino on Saturday at 3:00 PM. Tickets can be bought online at sonomaseawolves.com and you can stream the game LIVE on the CCAA Network.
