Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MBB: Gators Storm Past Seawolves with Big Second Half

ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. -  On Saturday, January 20th, the Sonoma State men's basketball team took on bay area rival San Francisco State to close out their two game homestand. After knotting the game up at 24 with a buzzer beater three from Cameron Barry, the Gators would come out firing in the second half and shoot over 50% from the field with eight triples to run away with the 14-point victory. Barry would lead the Seawolves with ten points and a pair of three's on the night while James Nobles finished with nine off the bench.

FIRST HALF SSU 24-24 SF STATE

Sonoma State got off to another terrific start with a 14-2 scoring run to force an early Gators timeout just over five minutes in. Dillon Iyawe had two early buckets inside to establish his paint presence but first year member from San Francisco City College, Matt Williams III, would get his second straight start for the Seawolves and cash in on a pair of triples to help ignite the early scoring run.

SSU would lead by as many as 13 in the half but the Gators would slowly chip away as they eventually tied the game up at 21 with just three and a half to play. They would connect on a jumper in their final offensive possession to take a three point lead but with just ten seconds remaining senior transfer Cameron Barry would misfire on a three ball attempt, but a huge offensive board from Iyawe would give Barry another shot in the final seconds. He would cash in on the second chance from three and knot the game at 24 as time expired.

FINAL SSU 50-64 SF STATE

Out of the half, SF State would go on a 9-0 run with a pair of triples of their own to take a swift nine point lead. The Seawolves would answer with a 6-0 run. Of their own though highlighted by a pair of dunks from Pierce Rexford and James Nobles to cut the deficit back down to three.

Then, in what felt like a heartbeat, the Gators would connect on three consecutive three pointers to silence the crowd and jump out to a 12-point lead to force an SSU timeout. San Francisco State wouldn't look back after that point as they went on to lead by as many as 19 while the Seawolves went just 1-10 from three point range after knocking down four in the first half. Shayewitz and his group would cut the deficit to single digits twice in the final ten minutes but the Gators always seemed to have an answer as they held on for the 64-50 victory.

Barry finished with 10 points to lead Sonoma State while Nobles had 9 off the bench. The Seawolves still managed to force 15 turnovers on the night but eight three pointers for the Gators would prove the difference in the second half. SSU would finish with a season low 50 points as they look to regroup with a pair of road games next week against some NorCal rivals.
