Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MBB: Seawolves Go Down to the Wire but Fall on Final Shot to Lumberjacks, 64-66

ARCATA, CALIF. – On Thursday, January 25th, the Sonoma State men's basketball team traveled north to take on Cal Poly Humboldt looking to get back in the win column after dropping their previous contest to San Francisco State. Both teams were knotted at 29 at the half but the Jacks got a pair of late buckets to push the lead to five with under two minutes in regulation.

After cutting the lead down to two, the Seawolves would force a missed three point attempt and push the floor to get a look at the tie with seconds remaining. Julian Bryant would grab a loose ball and get a decent look in the paint but the hook shot would rattle off the rim as time expired, giving the Jacks there first conference win of the season.

The contest was played at a relatively slow pace despite both teams finishing the night shooting nearly 50% from the field, but Cal Poly Humboldt owned the glass out-rebounding SSU 27-18, a season low for the Seawolves. Sonoma State had four players in double figures with junior James Nobles leading the way with 17 points off the bench. He was an efficient 5-7 from the field and 5-6 from the free throw line. Dillon Iyawe, Julian Bryant and Andrew Henderson were the other double figure scorers as they combined for 34 points on the night.

Shayewitz and his group were solid from the stripe with 21 made free throws, good for second most on the season, but their struggles from three continued. The Jacks made seven three's in the second half and finished with ten for the game compared to SSU's three. The Seawolves zone defense made Humboldt's offense work all night for tough buckets but they found a way to hit some clutch three's late in the shot clock to maintain control of the game.
