ROHNERT PARK, CALIF.- It was a battle of local CCAA rivals with the San Francisco State Gators making the short road trip to SSU and the Wolves Den. The two programs went head to head in a five set thriller that saw both teams refuse to back down. Unfortunately, despite an outstanding team effort, the Seawolves fell just short in the final and decisive fifth set.
In terms of putting points on the board the duo of Jackie Winfield and Peyton McBride were dynamic. Each player chipped in 15 kills with both posting hitting percentages north of .300. Winfield in particular has enjoyed a breakout season. She is now up to 91 total kills and has reached double figures in kills in five of her last six matches.
The swiss army knife for the Seawolves for the day was Kaden Young. Young stuffed the statsheet doing a little bit of everything for her team. She had 10 kills on a team high .421 hitting percentage, a match high four service aces and impacted the defensive side of the net with 12 digs as well. Young constantly made key plays that kept her team in the match all night long including four straight outstanding serves during the teams late rally in the fifth set.
In terms of setting up their teammates, once again Jules Tan and Brynna Slayton got the Seawolves going. The pair combined for 46 assists as both eclipsed 22 assists for the night.
Not to be left out of the conversation Brooklyn Jackson and Emily Hernandez were a force defending the net. Hernandez was far and away the matches leader in block assists with six. Jackson also had four block assists with most of them coming alongside Hernandez. Arguably the highlight of the match came when Jackson and Hernandez posted two massive blocks to tie the fifth set at 14 after trailing the Gators 10-14 just moments before.
Sonoma State is back in action on October 12th for another CCAA tilt against Cal State San Bernardino. The match has been scheduled to start at 1:00 pm.
